I obtained the Oracle Linux 6 – Certified Implementation Specialist (OCS) certification. An important step in my technical path, consolidating experience with Linux administration in corporate environments and Oracle ecosystem.

Oracle Linux 6 Certificate, 2015

Although I don’t specifically work with infrastructure, I’ve always been passionate about server administration and Linux environments. A few years ago I had the LPI certification as a goal, but due to changes in my work in recent years this ended up falling behind. Now I had the opportunity to obtain this certification and didn’t think twice about embracing the challenge.

Quick tips

  • Review of official Oracle Linux 6 and UEK (Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel) guides.

  • Laboratory practice with YUM/ULN, Ksplice, KVM, LVM, SELinux, iptables and networking.

  • Kickstart installation simulations and boot and services troubleshooting.

  • Focus on system administration

  • Package and repository management

  • Kernel and modules

  • Network services

  • Storage (LVM/FS)

  • Security (SELinux/iptables)

  • Set up a lab and practice commands daily, manpages and --help are your friends.

  • Know how to diagnose: logs in /var/log, system-config-/service/chkconfig (OL6 context), journal usage in newer versions.

  • Understand repositories (ULN/YUM), UEK kernel vs. Red Hat Compatible Kernel and when to use each.

  • Reread official exam objectives and make a personal summary.
